My first inspiration for the First Day of Summer Quilt came last June (of 2011) when we found out we were having a baby boy. It was a really great excuse to buy new fabric – so I found an awesome 100% organic cotton fat quarter bundle from Birch Fabrics – their circa 60 Beach Mod by Monaluna. It was love at first sight. How can you go wrong with trees, surf boards, tents, ducks, guitars and polka dots all together in awesome shades of teal, brown, orange and yellow? You absolutely cannot. I hoarded the bundle for a long time (as you can see), and finally after I signed up my first Farmer’s Market, it became time to cut in to that gorgeous stack of fabric. I really loved the quilt I did for little Finn (I never did a proper blog post because I was too busy being pregnant- the nerve!), it was simple but really showed off the mix of fabrics nicely. So I decided on another of the same pattern, a good way to get me back into the groove of quilting since my hiatus after having the baby. This quilt was a blast to make. Every print I just adore, and they all go so nicely together. The back is an uneven split of brown and yellow, with a strip of squares of the various prints in the middle, and quilted with straight lines, binded with a Joel Dewberry fabric. This quilt shouts summer – so how fitting that I finished it on the first day of summer. I am in love… hard to sell it but it is up for sale, and will be available to purchase at the Farmer’s Market this Sunday, July 29. It’s a mix of just plain old awesome cotton, with 100% organic cotton and has a light cotton batting. The dimensions are crib sized at 40″x50″ but could make a great lap throw. I am always using Finn’s to cuddle under while he’s falling asleep in his crib.
In other news, I’ll have other non-baby product this weekend at the farmer’s market – thought I might capture a larger audience. I’ll be selling iPad cases – double lined with cotton batting and with fun exterior fabric combinations. I’ll have cotton laminated zipper pouches – perfect for anything, really – and made out super fun fabric prints with coordinating zippers. Must have. I also have some simple snap pouches, which would be perfect for your phone, camera or sunglasses. They are lined with cotton batting so will actually protect what goes in them. And my latest baby product addition are some cuffed pants made out of fun fabrics, like these (I made these for baby Finn):
They are super fun and have simple cuffs that roll up at the bottom. I have one size available – 12 months. But I’ll take any custom orders, so make a list! And… the usuals – Fun Buckets, Sun Hats, Grab n’ Go change kits, bib/burp cloth sets, tag blankets, wet bags, project/toy bags… etc. Fun stuff, and something for everyone. Come and visit on Sunday from 9-1!
