So, my sewing endeavors are expanding. For Christmas this year, Alex got me a serger AND a leather sewing machine. He is so excited to see my capabilities expand, and he is right – those machines will definitely expand my abilities! I did sew my first leather bag, but it wasn’t exactly perfect. There is definitely a learning curve to developing a proper leather pattern and sewing leather. And, when you have to take stitches out of leather, you are left with holes, which is very different than fabric. You have to really know what you are doing! I haven’t spent much time with the serger, I basically watched the tutorials, but haven’t dared do anything with it. I am taking a class tomorrow on how to use it, so that should be really good.
I also recently purchased a few new sewing books for inspiration. Seams to Me by Anna Maria Horner is a great book. It has an excellent Sewing 101 in the first couple chapters, and then a great selection of sewing projects, with patterns! I highly recommend it. I also got a couple of great quilting books, which is my recent obsession. Mom and I did some good fabric shopping this weekend at Mardens, my all time favorite place to get great fabric for hardly anything. LOVE IT! I am eager to experiment with all the spectacular fabrics I got. But my latest project is my 2nd quilt ever – the first one having been a gift to my dearest brother and sister-in-law for their wedding. I didn’t exactly do all the work on that project. Mom helped me with the quilting and the binding. So this quilt will be the first ever on my own. Here’s a picture of it underway:
